API manufacturing processes generate complex and high-strength effluents containing organic solvents, high total dissolved solids (TDS), and chemical residues that can be harmful to the environment if not properly treated. The implementation of a ZLD system ensures full compliance with environmental regulations while supporting sustainable production practices in the pharmaceutical sector.

A typical ZLD plant for API industries involves a combination of physical, chemical, biological, and thermal treatment processes. Initially, the effluent is subjected to pre-treatment for pH correction, oil and grease removal, and reduction of organic load. This is followed by biological treatment to degrade organic contaminants. The treated water is then processed through membrane systems such as ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) to recover a large portion of clean water for reuse. The concentrated reject from the RO system is fed into a Multiple Effect Evaporator (MEE) to further concentrate the salts, while the condensate from the evaporator is recycled.
